OHH! SO FAMOUS! LIGHTSOVERLA INTERVIEW

Ohh! So Famous!
This isn’t the first time I’ve written about LightsOverLA and probably won’t be last. It’s been roughly since 6 months since entering the scene and releasing several chart topping remixes. With such a diverse musical background and willingness to explore unknown sounds, the answer to their success is no mystery.

The above track will be available July 8th via Beatport.

I called it the first time I wrote about LightsOverLA and still stand by my words, this electronic act will break out from the rest. We recently got a chance to sit down with Stormy and grab a quick interview.

LIGHTSOVERLA started how?

LightsoverLA started because I was pretty much tired of being in metal/hardcore bands and trying to get 4 other dudes on the same page with what I wanted to do. I had always had a love for electronic music and I decided to start something from the ground up by myself and see how it went.

Thom Yorke recently said the music industry is going to die in the next few months, what do you think about it?

I don’t think the music industry will ever completely die. I think that major labels are definitely on their way out. I think thats because the internet has changed the game in so many ways. You can pretty much do your own thing without the help/money from a label now. I think if anything its one of the most exciting times in music.

What kind of gear and software do you guys use?

I use Ableton and I couldn’t imagine using anything different. Along with Ableton I use a Axiom 25 Midi controller and JBL monitors. Along with my Macbook Pro that barely works and a ton of cracked programs ;)

If you could of written an exsisting song, what song would that be?

Hmm thats a hard one so I am gonna go with each of my favorite genres:

Metal: “Pantera-Floods” The solo in that song is beyond amazing and is one of those solos that changed my life.

Electronica: “Deadmau5-Brazil” Probably the song that got me REALLY into electronic music, its amazing and I listen to it probably once a day.

Pop: “Paramore-everything” I love everything Paramore has ever done they are one of my top 5 favorite bands no doubt.

Ohh! So Famous!

Favorite synth or sound you’ve created to date?

I think some of the stuff that people like about my tracks are the different effects I use to create atmosphere and the reversing of samples that I do a lot. But as far as synth sounds there is this sound that I actually haven’t used on any released tracks yet where I pitch down the a sound I made on Absynth and throw a ton of reverb on it…sounds so sick!

[audio:http://OhhSoFamous.com/Music/Betatraxx - Foxtrot (LightsOverLA Remix).mp3]

I’ve noticed LIGHTSOVERLA crossing over into different genres. It seems we both understand that genres really don’t fucking matter anymore. That being said, how long do you think it will take before mainstream music starts following the same trend?

It seems the trend in majors is to take whatever is cool in the underground or whatever Diplo/Mad Decent is doing and commercialize the fuck outta it to the point where it sucks, Keisha is a perfect example of this.

Best album or single of 2010 thus far?

Netsky’s self titled record is so far the sickest album of 2010..That record is beyond amazing and he stepped up the game hard on that record.

What’s the most important part of the sandwich?

I just made some amazing chicken bacon burgers topped with bleu cheese..So probably whatever is in the middle…The bread is just kinda there to top it off!

What was the last movie you went to see?

I saw A-Team while I was in Philadelphia..The action in the movie was just beyond ridiculous but all in all it was a entertaining movie.

On a more serial note, I keep getting emails, asking me about LIGHTSOVERLA tour dates. The mob has spoken, your answer?

I actually just joined up with GreenElectronic Productions out of San Francisco and we are working on a ton of dates and the current roster that he is working with is an amazing group of up and coming talented DJ’s/Producers. So if you want LightsoverLA to come to your town PLEASE email your local promoters or drop us an email with your local venues and promoter emails!

I’LL HAVE WHAT THOM YORKE IS HAVING

Ohh! So Famous!
I was having a conversation about the state of the music industry with a close friend today and he brought up Thom Yorke’s recent comments in an interview. Basically, dude thinks “It’ll be only a matter of time, being months rather than years before the music business establishment completely folds.”

Sigh. I have so many questions my friend.

You think, mainstream music companies are just fresh out of ideas?
Haven’t read one report stating physical sales are down?
They’re just gonna ride that dying horse til it’s dead?

Sorry buddy, I just don’t think twelve dudes are in a conference room staring down at a black piece of paper thinking “Well shit, this was fun but ride’s over.”

None of this is new, Thom.

I agree with you, musicians don’t need to tie themselves to a sinking ship. However, if one of these mainstream companies builds a better boat and develops a current and relevant business model, jump on board. You ever see Titanic? Even that bitch had survivors.

You can find Xaphoon and his exceptional work here.

THIS IS A FLASHBACK

Ohh! So Famous!
I just want to start off by giving a shout out to Leonardo DiCaprio. You’re an incredible actor except in one film. I finished “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” yesterday and found myself thinking once again, he didn’t even try in that movie. Just disappointing. I thought you were suppose to be acting not playing a real life representation of yourself.

Sigh… I forgive… I mean you actually took time to give a shit in your other films and those are pretty good. Oh and before I forget, I have a friend that wants to know if your a method actor. He told me if you are, to tell you he has a gay flick coming up and you’d be perfect for the lead. I’m only kidding, he said you’d be supporting.

Everything aside, these two remixes go hard. Skream can be found here and Troublemaker can be found there. Leo calm down, we love you. Like really fucking love you, but we got jokes. Don’t hate the playa, hate the franchise.

Til next time,

DUB A DUB DUB

Ohh! So Famous!
Have some big dubstep sounds tonight. I’ve blogged about WhiteNoise before and was extremely excited to receive some new material from him. A constant changing landscape of sound in “New World” cements his upcoming influence in Dub-step scenes around the world.

WhiteNoise (ft. Zolokere Choir) – New World

I previous made a post on the subject on dub-step breaking it’s way into the mainstream. J Saxton’s remix of “EarthQuake” has many of the elements needed to make this transition, very excited about this track.

Little Boots – EarthQuake (J Saxton Remix)

Giant bass lines coming out of this next song. This filthy track fills your ears and is the perfect introduction to Dubstar, a brand new loud and addictive newcomer.

STYLUST BEATS & TGM

Ohh! So Famous!
STYLUST BEATS is dub step artist out of Vancouver who is solid booked through August. His tacks is for sale here. After throwing on their track, anyone can see why. We have a sexy arpeggiator to lead us in, a gratifying drop, a wobble bass that can only be described as cocaine for your ears.

STYLUST BEATS – 4 CENTERS YIKES!!!

The Glitch Mob has been on my radar for quite some time now and I honestly can’t believe I haven’t blogged about them sooner. Their Hip hop embed Electro Rock sound in “Drive Like You Stole It” (which you can get here) compliments their name perfectly. This song lets you drift away while its cuts bringing you back to current day.

NIT GRIT & HOT CHIP

Ohh! So Famous!Nit Grit is a Dub artist out of San Jose who is pumping out huge sounds. It’s not hard to hear the time and effort put into his music. Paying off once again, “Lupin” is a mixture of heavy saw bass lines and hooking hip hop leads that leaves you in a state of pure bliss.

Hot Chip returned with a new album entitled “One Life Stand” on February 1st and are currently on a supporting tour. With their new album, they have managed to evolve as a band as well as stay true to the sound in which we fell in love. Here’s the club version of “I Feel Bonnie”.

WHITE NOIZE

White Noize Noise
Have a brand spanking new dub artist out of Berlin named White Noize to share. He definitely has a gift for giving such an addictive and signature spin to his remixes. Keep an eye out for his future releases, with work of his quality you won’t have to look too far.

The intro, the cut clean vocals, and hooking percussion give an entirely new and refreshing perspective to Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi”.

M A S S I V E – D U B

Ohh! So Famous!

Ohh! So Famous! is a music blog.

I’ll be posting everything music from A to Z .. and even some numbers occasionally.

I’ve been listening to tons of Dub lately so let’s kick it off.

Nero originally started out making DnB tracks and have had no problem making their transition into Dub-step. The constant build up’s, drops, and breakdowns in Innocence give you everything you’d expect from a Spring anthem and more.

Nero – Innocence
[audio:http://ohhsofamous.com/Music/Nero_-_Innocence__Original_Mix_.mp3]

Next up we have a 16 Bit Remix of Plan B’s “She Said”. This track is MASSIVE. The gritty and painful bass line rips through your speakers leaving you begging for more.
