LIGHT ON CRYSTAL CASTLES

Ohh! So Famous!
Crystal Castles have been involved in a number of creative commons lawsuits, accused of stealing other artist’s songs such as Lo-bat, HEALTH, and Covox. The latest defense I’ve heard for this is “Their label uploaded one of their remixes without them knowing it.” Ok so, If the label uploaded a remix, why was the file name not properly identified as a remix? ex: Lo-bat – My Little Droid Needs a Hand (Crystal Castles Remix). Also if you recall correctly, CC originally denied even knowing who these artists were.

Here’s what I find annoying. It takes talent to sequence drums, samples, and arrange songs in a hit format time after time. You might think anyone can sit down and with a few tutorials be on their way to creating the next hot album, but that isn’t true. Some people get it, and some don’t. Crystal Castles gets it and that’s what I hate. If you have the “it” factor, why not take a just little more time out and avoid all the legal troubles. Their new album is very win, I’m just hoping these issues don’t become a Trending Topic for this band.

Back in 2009, CC came to Dallas and canceled their sold out show, about an hour before go time and with fans waiting outside, because “The venue’s sound system was ill-equipped.” The Granada has catered artists to She Wants Revenge, Miike Snow, and Minus the Bear to name a few and having been to many live shows there, I call bullshit.

Vega -All Too Vivid

(In late 09′ VEGA’s gear was stolen in Sacramento so I won’t be posting a download link for their songs.)

They proceeded to kick VEGA off their tour for a stolen pedal. Crystal Castles had borrowed one of VEGA’s guitars the previous night and the pedal made it’s way into their trailer at the end of the night. They immediately called CC’s management and informed them not to worry, they would give it back in Dallas. It seemed no matter what, the show was not going to happen that night. VEGA called up a local buddy, pulled some strings and proceeded to play a free show for everyone that turned out that night.

Vega -No Reasons

There is a reason why Crystal Castle’s myspace comments are “Approve Only”, YouTube videos are “Removed by a third party”, and they decided to denied interviews for such a long time.

~Ohh! So Famous!

PS: Have you heard of Kap Bambino? They’ve been around since 2002. Crystal Castles didn’t drop “Alice Pratice” until 2006.

lol crystal cunts are the best even though they are cunts. cc continued playing shows with vega so it was obviously blown out of proportion. i saw them together in l.a. months later, rad show. health, covox, lobat are allll listed in the album credits wtf is this biased post about. oh kap bambino suck the worst.

  2. OhhSoFamous says:

Yes, most of this is resolved now… but still, it should have never been an issue in the first place.

  3. deleeted says:

oh i forgot you were there and know everything that happened. even Vega says CC did nothing to them it was all made up on the internet. HEALTH was always creditted from the start and cc had no control over the leak of old demos with covox and lobat samples. and guess what covox and lobat publicly said they didnt care because the songs were unreleased. fuck your biased post man, leading people the wrong way for no reason

  4. OhhSoFamous says:

None the less, they pretended as if they had no idea the chip-tunes world existed. This is a direct quote.

“It was only to create annoying sounds. That keyboard was made back in 2004… and then we learned about this whole 8-bit scene, which we don’t really have anything to do with. It’s a completely different world.”

I enjoy Crystal Castles music and think their new album has some great songs on it. All I’m saying is I really hope this time around nothing like this comes up.

Hold on a minute… if it’s just a demo, an artists primary concern is not scrupulous naming of files. Demos are not supposed to be heard outside a small listening circle, so it’s simply unfortunate that it leaked. This seems like an issue that has been blown out of proportion from the start, then repaired by each involved party and written off as a ficticious internet story created by detached parties. Now, random information has been blogged about again and again to no avail. What is the point of this?

  6. OhhSoFamous says:

Ok… So what about them sampling and not giving credit to:

    Van She in Vanished.
Death from Above 1979 in Untrust Us.
Drinking Electricity in their song Good Time.

They did give credit to Drinking Electricity in Good Time.

I won’t even bring up the Trevor Brown fiasco.

  8. Mike says:

Van She, Death From Above 1979, Drinking Electricity, and Covox are all credited in the Crystal Castles CD album liner notes you fucking idiot. Lo-bat was never credited because the song was not released so where are you supposed to put the credit, on the invisible imaginary liner notes? WTF is wrong with you.

    • OhhSoFamous says:

Your right they are credited NOW.

      But what about THEN?

Let’s say I did a bank heist. I couldn’t deny the robbery, get shown a video of my face on camera in the act and THEN admit to the crime to everyone. People would be furious and tell me to go fuck myself.

People should be held accountable for the things they’ve done in the past is all I’m saying.

  9. Mike says:

Where do liner notes go on demo mp3s that you’re not supposed to have? You are asking for the impossible.

There was no “THEN.” The CD was the FIRST TIME anyone heard the songs which sampled of Van She, DFA-79, and Drinking Electricity. Guess what, the credits were in the booklet. No surprise there.

I love your made up scenarios.

    • OhhSoFamous says:

I agree with you, notes can’t really go on a demo mp3 that was leaked and never meant for release.

However, later when asked if they knew or had heard of the Chip Tune genre…. that was the time to speak up and pay dues. Instead, they said they’d never heard of the genre and it was a mere coincidence their music used similar elements. Later down the line they retracted their statements.

Like I said, hold them accountable.

  10. Mike says:

where do you come up with this shit?

look at this from mid-2007 (note that the chip controversy was mid-2008):

SvS: So do you consider yourselves an 8-bit band?

Ethan: The 8-bit scene is great. So many great artists in that scene…but I wouldn’t call Crystal Castles an 8-bit band. Some songs do have 8-bit, but then some songs are based on circuit bending experiments, and then “Magic Spells” has no 8-bit or circuit bent sounds. It does have the Grand Master Flash sample 30 or 40 seconds in. Some songs have no electronics, there’s an unreleased song called “Tell Me What To Swallow” which is just an acoustic guitar and 40 layers of Alice’s voice.

oh and look i found an answer which touches upon the Lo-bat sample (in Insecticon)

SvS: When are you putting out an album? How many songs?

Ethan: We are currently putting that together. We are aiming for 15 songs. It’s taking a bit of time because a few of the songs have samples and we can’t find some of the copyright owners. On one track I sample an obscure 1950s track and the artist has been deceased for a decade. We can’t figure out who owns the copyright. Actually, there’s a lot of tracks that will be left off the album because we can’t find the copyright owners of the samples. She Fell Off will be left off because of this. Same with Insecticon. Which is a shame because I love those songs.
